Question Help, Oil Pressure goes down, and the truck shuts off

Hello forum,
Ok i just got my dad a 2001 2500 Ram 4x4 v10 Sport, i got it in Tucson and he drove it to Reno to get a 5th wheel (and it got up there fine, but he did say going up hills it would lose power). Well he didn't get the 5th wheel, but he said one night going to work the oil gauge dropped to zero and the truck shut down. He had to get it towed back to his trailer. He works about 3 hrs away from reno in the middle of no where and i just want to save money and see if anyone can help, to what the problem might be. He said he changed the oil and it was black, and the filter was dirty as all hell. He said the dealer didn't change anything, and i did ask them to do it and they did say they did it (but thats another story). He said it starts up and gets to 40 psi but after a few mins the gauge drops to zero and shuts off. If anyone can help it would be great, cuz i love this truck, and im proud that i was able to help my pop out. Thank you.

OK heres more info: The truck starts up fine, and no noise is coming from the engine, and it runs on gas. at 2200 rpm the oil goes down and it stops it and shuts everything down, he stops it and starts again and shows 40 psi oil pressure again.

If it hasn't been maintained properly, the oil pump pick up tube/screen could be clogged, the pump could be going bad or worse case the bearing tolerance's are no good due to the poor maintenance.
