Yes, but supposedly Rotella still uses a high Zinc mixture.

I'm currently running the Rotella 15-40 in both my dodge 5.2L and Chevy 5.7L gassers. I have no problems at all even with 10* cold starts no problem.

Yes, I was basing that statment mostly on what I've heard from Mercedes Diesel owners but also from some 3/4 and 1 ton Diesel truck owners.

I've thought about the argument that Rotella is cheap and you can buy it at wally-mart, therefore more people who don't follow recommended oil changes are apt to be running it. It makes sense to me if someone spends the extra money for Royal Purple or some such, they are also going to be more meticulous about changing their oil.

Honestly, I beleive you can use any brand oil that meets the manufacture's recommendations and you'll be fine as long as you change it regularly and don't do anything foolish. If you are racing or have the engine highly modified, you need to modify the oil you are using as well.

If you really need more zinc (high performance engine, racing, flat tappet cam), Valvoline VR1 is a good choice.

I've always been amussed by the arguments over motor oil. People used to swear Pennzoil would clog up your engine with asphalt. One of my favorite lines in an oil discussion is "I've been using xyz and it works great". Which usually means I haven't thrown a rod or something.

we run rotella in our dumptruck but run valvoline in our tractors, and for blacksky just about every tractor has a spot of oil under it somewere, our dump truck has 300,000 used rotella all its life and never leaks a drop, its also IH and our tractors are JD haha

anyways, my grandpa put some valvoline 15-40 in his intrepid for years, now it burns 1 qt. every 100 miles! its pretty hard to hurt these dinosaur v8s though

I work in a tractor trailer repair shop. With oil changes I'd say 50% use Mobil Delvac, 40% use Shell Rotella and 10% use Chevron Delo when it comes to big rig oil changes in these parts.

I use Mobil Delvac 1 synthetic in my Ram. Its for diesels but is a 5w-40.

LOL yeah I realize that, I meant inside the engine... Though we do have a few farmers that hate leaks.

Also, how hasn`t your grandpa needed to replace his cats yet???

I might be going out on a limb but no, his car puffs out whiteish blue smoke every morning and has plenty of power, my truck and that car floored, we ran pretty even, it has never had any matinence what so ever all its life though, heres a history of its matinence

10,000 miles oil change
50-75,000 miles oil change every 3000
100,000 rear brakes changed
some were in this break added 15-40 untill it filtered out all the 10-30
140,000 oil changed again and new air filter
145,000 changed oil again and changed 1 spark plug (I broke the one I pulled out)
147,876 as of 3/01/10 at 7:30pm

my grandpa had the mind set of if it isnt broke dont fix it, which is completly opposite of his and our equipment matinence, he once said "I dont know of anybody that changes oil every 3000 miles" as he was changing oil in his bulldozer that gets run 1 or 2 times a year

Just found out some interesting information...Mobil 1 High Mileage carries the older SL specification and therefore has more zinc in it compared to oils with the new SM specification. I'll be using that next oil change.
