Default Input on potential new truck?

Well as most of you probably know, I totaled my old ram, so I've been looking for a new one ever since. Checked out several and test drove them, etc. Keep passing them up. I'm seriously considering this one and wanted some opinions on it.

1994 Ram 1500, 318, 5 speed, short bed. This guy's had it about 2 years, and only uses it just to drive to school and back really (about a 300 mile drive every weekend). The previous owner beat on it pretty good, and so he's went through and replaced all sorts of things. He's looking to buy a diesel and is trying to sell this one to put down money on it.

-Brand new 318 crate engine, straight out of the box, almost 4500 miles on it. Had its first oil change, etc.
-5 speed, brand new OEM clutch
-Rebuilt rearend, 3.55s like stock, open diff.
-New tie rods, WP, radiator, shocks, rear brakes,
-New Cooper STTs 245/75, under 500 miles, mounted on Cragar Soft 8s
-comes with stock wheels and some 285/75s
-magnaflow dual exhaust, with a new cat and a single chamber flowmaster muffler
-aftermarket speakers and head unit
-never been repainted or anything, it has a tiny spot of rust above the drivers side rear wheel well, and a tiny hole on the drivers side rocker
-Truck has 147k, but a lot of major parts have less than 5k.
-just got inspected a month ago

-All it needs is an E-brake slack adjuster (How much are those??), the minor rust fixed, and for the steering to be perfect it would need a gear box (~$150). He says it runs excellent and the body appears to be in pretty good shape.

He is asking for 4000 OBO. It books for just shy of 3000. I havent been able to check it out yet with work and stuff but Thursday I should be going up to check it out. If it is as solid as he makes it sound, I'm wondering what you guys would pay for it. I am thinking about 3200-ish? He probably has 5k in parts in it, but it is what it is.

I like it; definitely go with a lower offer than 4000. Remember though, that you will be missing out on lots of engine mods by buying a 94.

Yeah, but there will still be some things I can do to get a few extra ponies if I wanted to down the road.

And I wish it was a long bed, it'd be PERFECT. I don't know if I would regret it or not to be honest. Do those of you with short beds miss the other 2ft?

It will mostly be for driving around, maybe take it off the road a bit, lift kit? I wanted something with a hitch because last year I did a bit of landscaping (thats how I have most of the money to buy a truck). But generally, I just want a nice truck to drive around in thats reliable and I can put some money into and keep for a while.

It has red interior, which could be good or bad thing..It's original but if I ever needed to find a replacement it'd be a PITA.

Just the idea of a new motor and clutch is a good thing!!! I like it looks much better than the last one.

I'd ask for paper work on the "new engine", and wouldnt pay over book price for it, its up to you though, cash talks.

my last ram? Or the last one I posted about? The last one I posted was really rough, needed a lot of work. someone bought it though so i guess I wasnt the only one who thought it could be worthwhile.

He says he has most receipts but not all of them. But the engine department should look brand new with a new long block. If not then hes BSing.

I don't want to pay too much over book price, but he does have 5k into it and it hardly needs anything, and all major parts are new, so it should last much longer. I'm thinking about offering 3200 cash and seeing what he says

Kinda sounds like your almost set on getting it. If the motor checks out and its a stick, sounds ok. I know how it is, when i have my mind set on getting something i want it right then and there, then i have to step back and think about it. I like shortbox's better on a truck also. Has potential, atleast you know all the prob area's to check out

I don't know. I want another truck, this ones basically what I want, but I would make it a long bed if I could..just not sure how much I'll miss it if I got a short bed.

I wouldn't say I'm set on it. I'm definitely going to check it out. I tend to do this a lot - kind of like imagining myself with the truck and thinking how long it'd last, if I'd like it, what it would need, etc.
