thanks for all the input everyone
Usually by looking at the truck you can tell why it is in the junkyard. At least in my area finding parts for your year or a few later is easy. It's finding parts for 98+ that is a pain. Some yards even offer warrantys on their parts so if you bought a trans and it was bad you can exchange it. Just depends on your area mainly but I wouldn't think you would have much to lose by trying. Give a couple local yards a ring and go from there. But again... if I scored a good of a deal as you did, I wouldn't be dropping over a grand into it. If you did get a junkyard trans and say it gives you 6 months or a year out of it... its still worth it imho. Local yards around here will give $200 for your vehicle with title last time I asked so i see it as cheap transportation.

You can't use a 4wd tranny because the tailhousings do not swap. Only the entire OD unit and will swap and yours will be full of friction material that will destroy the new tranny.
You do know that it's just a couple of snap rings to swap the output shaft, right? Since he would have the OD unit off he could clean out the housing anyway... The hardest part is getting the output shaft splines and the OD planetary splines lined up without an intermediate shaft to use while reassembling everything.

I know its easy to swap but I would not want to risk taking out a new tranny. There could be particles in the governor tubes that would be difficult to clean out or the bearings could already be damaged.

No I literally meant the output shaft, not the whole thing, I'll see if I can find a picture, otherwise I can just go out to the shop and take some... The governor tubes are the same 4x4 or 2wd, just use the one's from the junkyard trans as well as the governor assembly.

BTW, where do you live in WI? I'm north of Eau Claire a little ways...

Alright. Pics would be great. Maybe there is something about the 2wd cases I am not realizing. I when I did my 4x4 case I remember the entire 4x4 OD unit and case being the same cast piece. Do you mean swapping the internals of the 4x4 case with the case and shaft of the 2wd?

I live 30 miles west of Green Bay. I am going to school at UW Platteville.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm near Richmond Va. I'll call around to some junk yards tomorrow and see if I can track one down on the cheap. I just pulled the dipstick out again and it does smell like burnt fluid, and it is a little darker now that it has mixed with the 5 quarts that I put in when I dropped the pan.

Its just such a shame, it was almost like hitting the lottery getting it for 250, because all I wanted was a backup vehicle and something I could haul stuff in when I needed it. Everything else on the truck is in amazing shape for 1995, besides the normal wear and tear and a few bends in the bumpers.

Oh and its the 5.2 motor

Ah, so you're pretty much straight east of me... Anyway, yes, taking off the 4x4 tailhousing, taking the guts out so you can get to the bottom and pop out the snap ring that holds the input shaft to the output drum. Then install the 2wd input on the 4x4 internals, clean out the 2wd housing and swap everything in. It's easier than it sounds. I'll see if I can get some decent pics with my phone...

I understand now. I was just confused at exactly what you meant earlier. I rebuilt the tranny in my 94 myself this last summer so I know how easy these trannies are once you have them figured out.

How long did it take you to rebuild the tranny and how much did it cost in parts?
