Where is this noise coming from?!
This is my first post. I have looked all over the net with no luck. I see that you folks are quite knowledgeable and I'm hoping you might be able to shed some light on my problem. Sorry for the long winded post, but here goes....
I have a 2000 1500 extended cab 5.9. A week or so back, I put a set of 16x10 pacers with 285/75 Nitto Terra Grapplers on. Soon after I started hearing a noise. I'm not sure if it is related to the new tires, or if I just never heard it before on account of the excessive shaking and rattling that my old tires caused.
The noise is coming from the rear. It sounds almost like brakes or something as it makes a clunk, clunk, clunk as the wheels turn. This is where it gets confusing. The noise is only audible when coasting. As soon as the gas pedal is engaged it quits. All fluids are good, wheel bearings seem to be good. With the rear end jacked up and the truck in drive, the noise is present. It can be heard by putting my ear close to the center cap of either rear wheel, but much louder on the passenger side. It can also be heard from in the cab or under the truck, but it is most noticeable by the passenger side wheel. U joint seems to be fine as well. A mechanic rode with me and insists that there is no noise other than tires...but this is not the case because the noise comes and goes as I accelearate/brake, and since I can hear it when it is jacked up. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for the help!

Pull the brake drum off and check the brake components. I had a clicking noise in my drivers side rear and actually found a broken spring in the drum. it is also possible that the center cap itself is wobbling around loose and making noise. I had this happen with a set of american racing wheels I bought.
Thanks for the response. I think I will dig into the brakes and see how everything looks. I can actually "feel" the noise with my feet when I'm driving as well, so i assume it's not a center cap. I t did drive me crazy that my mechanic insisted that there was no noise when I was sitting right beside him listening to it!
