Default transmission temp gauge

Hi guys i am new to the forum and this is the first time owning a dodge. Its a 1996 club cab longbed 4x4 with a 360 in it. the transmission is a brand new jasper tranny my buddy i bought the truck from just put it in it didnt even have 30 miles on it yet. Well i tow a little and want to install a tranny temp gauge. This may sound dumb but what is the safe operating temp for the tranny and at what temp is it starting to overheat. Mor or less what is the safe temp range for this tranny.

I believe 160-180 is normal operating range. 220 is getting up there but I don't know what officially overheating is. What temp does the tranny temp light come on at?

There really is no point where the tranny is gonna "Crap out." The point of a transmission temp gauge is to monitor the temperature to prevent transmission damage. When it starts to get hot, you stop and let it cool down. I've had my transmission up to 215* while towing my camper twice. I stopped on the side of the road and at a rest stop and put the transmission in neutral, revved the motor to 1500 RPMs for 5 minutes and let the fluid cool back down to 180*. Usually when towing my camper my transmission temp is around 180*. I was on a hilly interstate (71), where as I usually pull on flat, Indiana state roads. But I do have a huge cooler on the front and an external transmission filter.

I believe it comes on at 250-260. Your tranny has probably burned up at that point!

I believe it's 270, but by that point the tranny will be close to junk. Mine rarely gets above 160. Silver posted a graph that shows how many miles a tranny can be expected to live based on average operating temperature. If I can find it I'll post it.
