Doug and lblair, thanks again for all the valuable information. I did buy a strap wrench yesterday at Harbor Freight. I hope that this tool will hold the pully without snapping. It is plastic and doesn't appear to be what I would call "heavy duty"....Arghh. Anyway, I'll find out this morning.

His truck has 102,000 miles on it, so I am not going to do the timing chain. He got home yesterday and has to head back to Barksdale AFB on Sunday, so I don't have the time to replace a lot of other stuff..... (I hope you guys are online today if I get stuck)

I know this is dealing with that heater pipe but my problem is getting to the bypass hose.It looks like it goes to somewhere near the thermostat housing not sure.Do I have to take off the alternator,a/c compressor and mount for it to get to that bypass hose?

the bypass hose attaches to the the front off the intake, down low, underneath everything. generally you have to remove all that crap to get it on and off.

However, when i removed my water pump i had trouble with getting the fan off, so i ended up unbolting the waterpump with the fan/shroud all still attached, long before i took off alternator and ac. i cut the bypass hose and out it came.

so - if you have the water pump removed, you might be able to replace the bypass hose as is. attach it at the intake first, and then try to coax it on the wp. i'm afraid your not going to be able to tighten the clamp w/o removing that other stuff.
give it a shot.

Well just replaced my water pump a couple days ago and thought my bypass hose was still ok but now I know its not.As far as the fan attached to water pump there is a giant lug or whatever you wanna call it that is threaded onto the water pump pulley. But my water pump is already on so I guess alternator,a/c compressor and the mount for them are coming out.Oh the joy of taking all that off haha. But it is a bitch to work on the water pump with the fan shroud. What I did was take the four bolts of the actual fan and push that back and then take the shroud out.

Mike make sure you put some coolent on the new o ring before you push that pipe back in . It acts like lube. Also our timing chains suck. They get loose pretty quick. I realize your straped for time but it would be good to change it probably

If it were me, I'd take it off and reinstall it. MAKE SURE YOUR MATING SURFACES ARE CLEAN!!! If you didn't use RTV sealant on your gasket. Now would be the time to do so. Just a thin film on both sides. No need to over do it.

Welcome to dodgeforum, and since no one else mentioned it yet

This might come in handy, it's the factory service manual for our trucks. Dealer spec

Get a new gasket. I never use the gaskets that come with new water pumps, they are usually cheap and crappy. Get a FEL-Pro.
