Default Popping at high rpm's right before shift?????

Ya i kinda got a problem when i get on it it will pop and crackle at high rpm right before it shifts, any shift above 3000rpm.... possibly valves? only does it under a load, has to be in gear. someone told me transmission cause my trans is fixing to get rebuilt with a viper kit cause it slips everyonce in a while but i dont see how it would be the trans but any help would be great thanks...

I had a major problem for a while with the o2 sensor reading lean and dumping fuel and it was running exremely rich so i was checking the o2 sensors and realized the guy that re did my exhaust put the o2 sensors in backwards!!!! ya what an idiot and that caused my plugs to foul out twice from to much fuel and now there is black soot that comes out of my exaust pipes when i rev it wow huh?

compression rings are fine i already did a compression test... smooth idle its got correct pressure at the fuel rails and perfect injector ohms

Possibly a plugged cat, does the popping sound like a wrench hitting the manifold?

No it's more like a pop than a ping and I have brand new cats... Not enough backpressure maybe? I have pacesetter long tubes with high flow kitties and single chamber flow masters it had three inch all the way back from the collectors then I down sized it to 2.5in and got new mufflers and kittens still no difference in the popping but more mid range tq

There ain't no way it could be the trans could it cause it does it at 3000rpm if it shifts there sometimes you know I would think it would only do it at the high Rpms you know but if I bring it up to 5grand and let it shift it does it there too so idk WTF

your problem is you're lettin it get that high of an rpm man, if it's a stock engine 360 or 318 they break **** if you get into it alot, 3k shift points arent that great. Mine usually shift's around 2k - 2300. And i get into it every now an then when towing or just tryin to pick up speed to pass or get on the freeway

there is no power in these motors over 3000 rpm's. your best power comes between 1800 and 2800. at least in all the ones iv had and know of. i wouldnt be bringing it above 3grand on an every shift basis, something is guaranteed to grenade eventually

So what I'm wondering is what broke so I can upgrade it so that it won't brake again you see so you think it's the trans possibly or what cause some one said it's the valves and I might have slack in the timing chain and my timing is off... And for the record my torque curve starts at about 2500 and don't slack off till about 4500 there is plunty of torque between that range and a cam with heads and properly tuned would broden that horizon

Oh and I have stock shift points I'm just saying for the sake of trouble shooting when I let it shift at three grand it pops there too not just at high rpms but before it shifts

If your plugs have been fouled out and haven't been replaced, good chance that is the problem.
These engines will turn 4500 and not hurt a thing as long it's in decent shape.
That's where the power starts falling off.
My 87 with 171000 miles falls off at 4000 to 4100, but it always has.
