Unhappy Lost 5th gear

So we're coming back from a long trip and I'm about 220 miles from home when all of a sudden it feels like the truck jumps out of gear, except the gear shifter is still in 5th. I had to drive the rest of the way home in 4th. Not fun.

So am I correct in assuming that a transmission rebuild is in my future? What exactly happened? Manual transmissions are one thing I've never rebuilt before so I'm a bit in the dark on what exactly happened.

Thanks

Now, I'm not an expert on the 5spd, but there's something about them where the a bolt comes loose in the tranny and destroys everything. Maybe?

Close, on the NV4500 the retaining nut works loose and can cause damage. I may be wrong, but if I remember correctly, it usually doesn't cause other damage when the nut falls off.

So would it be a matter of dropping the trans, opening it up, and putting the nut back on?

Since you have a diesel, you should try and post in the diesel ram section. They will be more aware of the fifth gear failure than most of us 2nd gens with 1/2 ton trucks.

I have heard people talking about this in the past so it must be a common problem. Actually, i think on TRUCKS a few weeks ago they did this repair on a 2nd gen cummins they were working on.
