Default Think I bought someone elses problem :(

ok, new to the dodge truck, like the truck, dont like the problems so far. I understand that its 11 years old, so im not giving up yet. anyway, i had some transmission issues that i think i have fixed. BUT i took it for a 30 min drive to test tranny, and now i have oil coming from directly under the front driverside shock. I am in desperate need of a ujoint up there (this weekend) but im wondering what the oil could be. It is dripping pretty good, and its a clear oil. smells kinda like gear oil, but i think its too thin for it to be that. if i blew an axle seal wouldnt the oil come out from the end of the axle tube (behind the ujoint)? i can hear a squeeking (best description i can think of) when the oil is leaking, and i can see it dripping from the bottom shock mount bolt. SO my question TODAY is...... Are the shocks oil filled??? and if so, is i possible that a hole had rusted through the bottom of the shock, and the weight of the truck is forcing the oil out??? thats the only thing i can think of. there is really nothing else there to leak. and i dont think that the diff would be pressurized. i dunno, im a little bit adhd i think! lol any help is appreciated. Blake

Sounds like your on the right track, most shocks are oil filled, sounds like a bad shock to me.

check to see if the oil is blowing back from somewhere else when you are driving and then running down when you stop. when my power steering pressure hose started leaking it did almost the same thing you are describing. wind can make fluids appear to drip a long way from where the actual leak is.

probably leaking shock. $32 each at autozone, easy to change, but be sure you tighten the lower bolt to 100 ft lb or it will rattle.

leaking axle seal would be dripping out at the end of the tube, all over the knuckle/ball joint.

if that's all you've got wrong consider yourself lucky.

im almost positive it is a bad shock, just never had that happen to me before. like i said, if i look directly up at the bottom of the shock, thats where it is dripping from. guess I'll be doing that when i do my ujoint. I was thinking brake fluid at first, but there was a lot of oil dripping down, and my brake fluid level was fine. Lets hope my tranny holds up too!!! hasnt acted up since i changed my fluid & filter. my CEL has even went away!
