Default Steering box question

Guys,

I need to replace the steering box in a 1998 Ram 1500 4X4 and I was wondering if the the steering box in the Sport version was different from the regular truck ? I was hoping I could get a tighter ratio with a little better feel.

There is a long story that goes with this and as soon as I fix the problem I will post all about it. Maybe it will save soemone else a lot of aggravation (and Money).

Thanks Gary

IIRC, you can put a box in from a 3500, but I don't know the ratio difference.

Yep, the sport steering is the same.

1 ton steering gears have a different ratio, which sounds like what you are after. They also bolt right up. You could also try to find one for an off road model truck, as they had a slightly different ratio. Not sure on the difference of each, but there is some.

When I replaced mine a few years back, I got the one from PSC that is variable rate ratio. They had that one and a stock replacement. They recommended the variable ratio box only with a heavy duty truck or one with large tires due to the very low "road feel". It took me a while to get used to it cause it steers sooooooo damn easy, but now I love it.

I can't remember the ration off-hand right now but the 1500 has a variable ratio where the 2500 and 3500 did not.
