Default Noise from the Transfer Case...

I just recently engaged my 4 wheel and immediatly there was a loud squeel coming from the transfer case. I looked into having a shop rebuild it, but they said it would run about $1500. Too rich for my blood and I have a camping trip coming up, I NEED MY 4 WHEEL! Is this something that I could do at home? Would it be worth it to rebuild it or purchase a used one. I would hate to buy one and have IT fail too. Any and all info will be appreciated. Cheers to the Irish!

usually these transfer cases are bullitproof....if you get one from a junkyard ( http://car-part.com ) it should be able to hold up for a while....a used one with a warentee...

The only ones I could find in my area are different gears from what I have. ...If only I won the lottery.... But the guy I spole with at the shop said something about a "fork anchor" ???

That website has always been a lifesaver. Couldn't tell you how much I've used it, but I just hate thinking that I'm buying something somebody has already beat the living ****e out of.

just put it in until your trip is ovr, and while you have that one in, rebuild your old one yourself....thats what i would do.

Sounds like a good idea, at least that way if I break it, oh well... Is it too involved of a job for a drivetrain rook like myself is what I'm wondering. I could rebuild a motor, but have to change my shorts when it comes to trans/t-case repiar.

I found a few 231 T-cases from Jeep Cherokees. Are they any different from the Dodge 231's?

im asking the same thing.. and these transfers are not bullitproof... they are a weak link... but not so much on stock parts... i dont know what your problems could be, other then the same thing the shop said...

but get you a new one, and rebuilt the one you have, its not that hard, you can do it... as long as your mech inclinded...

You sure it's not the Cardan joint on the front driveshaft? Or is the noise there when not moving?

I know it's not the joint in the d-shaft. It'll squeel when not moving. Just today I engaged it to see if a neighbor could see something I hadn't. OF COURSE it doesn't make a sound. WTF...

But as for meanwhite, Yeah, it's all stock. Just the 5.2. No lockers....yet.

Anyone know a good source for a t-case? I found them at RockAuto and few others but I would like to use something a little more reputable. Thanks
