Default Are these Craigslist deals really that good??

I have been browsing ebay and have come across some serious deals. My initial thoughts are BULLS**T but after sending some email, I am almost convinced.

Example: 2004 Dodge Ram SLT 2500 Cummins $5,000
Truck is in great shape. Seller is (supposedly) a widowed mother of 1. Her and her daughter decided to sell their house and the truck. She is advertising on craigslist but completing the sale via ebay for protection reasons. Should I agree to buy, I pay ebay and they hold the money in a trust. The truck, buy-sell contract, keys, manual, and title delivered to me and I have 5 days to inspect. Assuming i am satisfied and have not contacted ebay within those 5 days, money is released to seller and I own the truck.

This price included all shipping and handling.

I hate to be naive, but it sounds pretty legit. I will include a picture, but no ad cause I don't want any of you jumping on this...

Yeah, you have to be careful of Craigslist. I have my bike on there and I get bogus emails from "companies" who can sell my bike for me. Not to mention the amount of bogus listings on there. I found a 2007 Honda Rincon for $3600, of course it was bogus. Guy was in PA, but the the four wheeler was in KY. Stated we could complete the transaction through eBay motors for security. Major red flag.

Thank you. I just needed to be re-assured. Being a poor college kid, its easy to be swayed towards a good deal. I'll save my pennies and buy legit when I am out.

Seems like the $25,000 John Deere tractor for $3,000 scam that pops up on Craigslist every once and a while.

another thing to watch out for on vehicles is outstanding title liens. this eventually turned out ok, but this happened to me -

bought a used vehicle recently on craigslist from a local guy, he was selling it for his out of state relative. car was fine, he had Kentucky title, signed over ok, etc, etc, we made a deal. went to get tag/title and the tag office, the lady there looked it over and remarked... her - well lets see, this is one of them out of state titles.... uh-oh, looks like you have an unreleased lien. me - a what? her - an unreleased lien from Honda America, see right here.. me - oh ****.

in most states, the bank holds the title until its paid off, and then send the owner the title with the lien signed off (released). in a couple of states, including Kentucky, the owner gets the title with the lien noted. when the loan is paid off, the owner receives a signed statement, which is a release. the owner is SUPPOSED to keep up with this paperwork.

so anyway - here i have a new to me used car, with an unreleased title. lucky for me that everything was on the up and up, and everyone was nice and cooperative, and Honda Finance was still in business, the loan had been paid off for years, and they sent me a release, but it could have been bad for me....

so be aware, and be careful, and take your time looking at the title - because you can bet your *** that the tag office will look it over closely. any unreleased liens, any erasures, any unsigned areas, any unfilled out odometer statements can cause you a problem, especially if its out of state where you can't easily meet with the owner and work things out.
