i hesistate to take it to cottmans, i took my 96 auto neon to them about 3 months ago and they wanted 4000. i laughed in the guys face and left. i started driving this truck (it's my parents spare) and now it's having transmission issues... and the '69 leMans that my dad is rebuilding has a broken transmission too. kinda frustrating.

well i'm sorry you had a high quote with them, but they seemed to give me a good price. It's worth a call to ask for a price, won't take you but more than a minute.

Another (low cost) option would be the following:

1. Drop the tranny pan and remove the valve body.
2. Take the valve body to a workbench and over the weekend, tear it down

or

3. After cleaning the valve body, test the solenoids. There are 2 of them (overdrive and governor pressure solenoids). These little gizmos energize based on pressure on their tiny little orifice (which can get clogged by gunk).
4. Reassemble, and put the valve body back in the tranny
5. Clean tranny cooler lines (reverse flush of cooler lines only with trans-flush pressurized can that you attach to the inbound cooler line and spray). This will flush your check-ball valve free and clear of any gunk.
5. Install new tranny filter and fluid
6. Adjust bands

Dropping the pan and cleaning the valve body cost $10 for cleaner. Flushing the lines costs another $10. Fluid and filter is about $30. So for $50 you can do this test. If the tranny is not runny any better after this, then it will need a rebuild, but you can do it yourself...

Good luck...
