Default Exhaust Question

Just had a flowmaster muffler installed, what do you guys think of taking off the cat and running a straight pipe in its place. No emissions where i live so no worries there, just worried about sound, power loss/gain, and noise on the freeway

You will have a permanent CEL if you do that (unless you somehow "fix" the post-cat O2 sensor).

Why not get a high-flow cat? That way you're legal and you don't have to worry about a CEL.

BTW, 99% of exhaust shops will not take your converter off without installing another due to Federal and possibly state (depending on where you live) laws.

i wanna see how loud it is cause i want to take mine out completely too. No laws around here about emissions or even how loud your truck is. I had a swamp buggy with a 350 and shorty headers flipped and run through the hood on my jeep. Used to get on it down main street blowing flames through the hood and the cops use to laugh and wave. were just a bunch of hillbillies

I have the same problem, and Ive been thinking about putting true duals on. The problem is that my 99 only has one cat. So I have to decide wether to leave out the cats or just go ahead and get two new performance cats. But I think your truck will sound alot louder, and you shouldnt really feel a big performance difference.

Removing the cat and putting a straight pipe in it's place is fine, But the Y pipe you're putting in it's place needs to be drilled and slotted with a nut welded onto it that way you can still use your precat O2 sensor.

otherwise your check engine will be on none stop

Not to mention your PCM will have no idea how to mix the air/fuel properly, and always run in open loop mode, which hurts MPGs and power. That pre-cat O2 sensor is very important.
