Default Cat questions, and superchips questions

My truck just doesnt have the ***** that it should. It is most noticeable on hills (on decent ones it has a lot of trouble climbing them). I thought it was the plenum/death flash (I now know these are unrelated). I tried putting a superchips in it to advance the timing some.

The superchips helped somewhat, but the power still isn't there. So I'm guessing my plenum is bad, however I'm too lazy to have taken off the airbox and checked it yet. I'll get to it.

Anyway, I was also thinking about it maybe being the cat. How can I check the cat without taking it off? What should the temp. be like before/after it? By merely touching it, it feels hotter after the cat...Gutting it is simply not an option because in PA we have emissions ;(.

And to you superchips gurus, what is the difference between the difference settings? I'm guessing Towing mode would just lower my mileage a lot and give me some more torque. Is there much of a difference between 87 and 91? Or stock? Doesn't feel like it.

Not sure on exact temp, but I believe it should be hotter coming out of the cat than going in if the cat is working properly. Most exhaust shops will do a cat check for cheap or maybe free.

Oh. I didn't know that. Maybe I'll run down to a shop after school tomorrow if I get a chance.

They might do a temp test or maybe pressure test. sometimes they drill a small hole in the pipe before the cat and if there is too much pressure at the hole, then your cat is clogged and not allowing enough exhaust gas to flow through....
