The a500 is a catch all term for the 42rh/re and 44re. The 500 and the 518 are very different in the main case gear set, no parts will swap and the case is different. The valvebodies are almost identical, as is the o/d unit.

Do you mean a500 or a518? a518/46rh/46re are all very similar (518 is a catch all for both 46re and 46re.) On the 518 the internal gear train are pretty much exactly the same, maybe a few small changes. The valve bodies look similar but are different, they have many of the same valves.

This says A500/518/618 http://atsg.com/cart/products/A500_518_618-35-7.html does it actually cover the RE series trannies?
If it does I will get a copy
Thanks

Thats about the only manual you are going to find for that transmission besides a factory manual. Dont know where you would find one of those.
It covers both the rh and re transmissions, or it should.

Hey MonteC, got a question for you. The piston on my front clutch (direct drum) seem to be scorn a bit. No hot spots but the measurements vary. I measured it all around the edge an there's a .007 inch difference. It measures anywhere from 3.09 to 3.15 inches. My question is, is this cause for concern? Should I replace it? By the way, I'm running a 3 friction, 3 steel drum with a 2.85 pressure plate and this is a 46re. I only wish I was able to upgrade to a 4 or 5 friction upgrade...but that's me dreaming.

You have a 46re, it is electronically controlled. The 1 2 3 shifts are controlled by the electronic governor solenoids, the 3-4 and lockup is controlled by the electroinc shift solenoids.
If you unhook the connecter the transmission reverts limp mode or safe mode which is only 3rd gear. If the transmission senses a electrical short internally it will go into limp mode. So if you have a shorted out 3-4 solenoid the transmission will stay in 3rd gear (limp mode).

I am now happy to report that with a 3" jumper wire - my truck is now drivable again..
Although it still pulls a PO753 code
It now shifts up and down from 1-2, 2-3 and it kicks down when needed...
No OD but it is at least very drivable... It's a 3 speed trans...
Must say it is a real stupid fail safe - that if you lose OD and TC lockup - the trans only goes forward in third gear...
