Default Rebuild time or easier fix?

Hi Monte,

I have a 1996 dodge ram- v-6, with a four speed overdrive.

Six months ago I installed a transgo shift kit. Since that day the only problem Ive had was I had to let off the throttle a bit to hit 3rd gear, then it would go to 4th and overdrive just fine. That was happening when shifting manuely, or just putting in drive.

This weekend I installed a B&M ratchet shifter in truck. Now it doesnt downshift at a stop or go into the 3rd gear even when i let off. I can sometimes get it to shift into 3rd and when i stop it stays in 3rd. I take off in 3rd it hits 4th and overdrive normally. I can also manually put the truck in 1st gear at a stop and the truck wont move. This is happening on and off, not everytime. Seems to help when i go up to reverse and then back to drive.

Does this sound like a valve body issue, maybe the electronic govener solinoid?

Or does this sound like a clutch problem and in need of a rebuild kit??

Any advise will be greatly appreciated and I'm at wits end at the moment.
Thankyou,
Big John

Default Trouble with fix

Hey Monte C

Way back when, I think it was early summer, I was having problems with my 47RE and you offered some help. I needed a front band on my transmission and you recommended a slip on band as a decent (but not perfect) fix. I went for it, by purchasing the band but only installed it today. The reason why I was so slow in doing this job was that I got used to manually shifting and it seemed to work fine. But finally, I had a free weekend and I took it on. Your instructions were awesome. The job went flawlessly. The only thing I had to find out on my own was the the "e" clip is exposed only when the transmission is in 1st gear. Anyway, I cut out the old band (very easy with a dremel wheel cutter) and installation of the new band was a snap. The old band, by the way, was toast.

So, finally, here is the problem. After installing everthing including spring and accumulator, torquing VB bolts to 115 inch pounds, installing new filter, readjusting front band to 72 inch pounds then backing off 1 7/8 turn, rear band to 72 inch pounds and backing off 3 turns, filling with 4.5 quarts of ATF 4.............the transmission does not function at all. It's dead. I get a slight "clunk" when I hit reverse but no go. I get a little more action in the forward gears but it's weak at best. Not sure if it's slipping or what. I checked and re checked the 8 pin connector, (but can do it again if you suspect that's my problem) All the linkage looks great. The only other thing I can add is that there is gurgling noises coming from the transmission after I shut the truck off and there is bubbles in the fluid when I check it. Valve body issues, maybe? I did not lube the new band with atf fluid, should I have? Anyway, any help would be appreciated!!

Default Problem solved!

I fixed my issue. One of those moments when you are glad you learned something but feel stupid for not knowing it already! I simply needed to add more transmission fluid. When I first filled it up, the dipstick said full with 4.5 quarts. After running it for about two minutes, I checked again with trans in neutral, and the dipstick registered zero fluid. Ended up having to add 4 more quarts for a total of 8 quarts. Why didn't I just notice how much came out to begin with? Live and learn. So, ultimately, this is just a big THANKS for the help. Transmission performs like new and I learned stuff, including how dense I can be at times!

Default What could cause this?

Alright had the truck up and running for about two months. The tranny is a rebuilt one I put it in with the rebuilt and improved motor.

The other day when on the hi way in o/d i get a loud bang from it then it gets kinda jumpy. I kick it out of o/d problem goes away.

I have been driving it around town with o/d off no problems. I went to get in it to go home last night and reverse didn't engage....it just ground and felt like it barely could catch. So I checked drive and it still worked fine, so I pushed the truck back and put it in drive and headed home, almost home it starts to shift funny like bands or clutches are or what ever is in those things started catching, causing the truck to buck.

I only got 600mi out of it.....unfortunately my warranty TIME limit is up I think, I am gonna tow it to American transmissions where I bought it from hopefully they will help me out there.

My question is what could have caused this to go bad so early?
I am positive the tranny fluid has been full at all times.

PS its a 46re with a 5.2 4x4 if any of that is pertinent.

Default After highway driving...

I have a 98, 360, 46re... after highway drives, and highway drives only, it shifts VERY late, maybe 4k, and can't get past 2nd on main roads at about 40-45mph. BUT, if I pull over, shut her off and start her right back up... problem is gone and she shifts VERY smooth. No cool down, just off, and restart. Had the problem before and after fluid/filter change (new truck to me). I just can't figure this one out, but I have a feeling it's got to be something electrical if it resets with a shut down and restart. I've done a thousand "searches" and haven't found anything even close. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Default 99 Dodge ram 1500 transmission not pulling

I have a 99 Dodge ram 1500 4x4 5.2v8, that is a imported vehicle from mexico(not sure is that matters.) The transmission will pull fine for a few miles and then just stops pulling and acts like its in neutral. If I turn the switch off and crank the truck back up then it will pull fine until you change it from drive to another gear for a min or two. Im thinking that its just some kind of sensor but not really sure anymore. Thoughs?

I'm fairly confident in saying, you both need to change the Governor Pressure Sensor and Solenoid. Just had the same problem recently, and it's a common problem.

You just described exactly what went wrong with my transmission last November.
I spoke to a friend of mine’s dad who had a transmission shop and he said it was a clutch pack that went out.
I don’t remember which clutch pack it was.
I never got around to tearing it apart verifying it; I just replaced it with a used transmission out of another truck.
I would be getting that back to the shop ASAP!! Most I think should have at least 90 day warranty.
