Replacing 2001 hub.
I removed the wheel, brake, and now just have the hub in front of me. Is there any thing els that I need to remove to get this thing off? I have been reading that there are 3 more bolts some where to unbolt it.
I'm assuming its a 4x4, I just done this on my 95 2500, not sure if there is a difference between mine and urs but... My hub is held on by 3 bolts, and after some research on this site I found that backing of the bolts a quarter inch or so and using an air chisel on the bolt heads to drive the hub out worked like a charm. I used a socket between the bolt and chisel to avoid having to buy new bolts. It did ruin the socket however.
+1 on using the air hammer thats how i do mine. the 3 bolts you are looking for are on the backside of the hub holding it in. your gonna have to turn the wheel to 3 diff position to be able to get to them all, you cant reach them all with the wheel being kept in one position. they are a 14mm. dont forget to remove your axle nut and washer and replace the cotter pin.
Nope, 2wd, I think it is just going to be tough to get it off. This hub was put on just a year ago, but I think the guy that did the ball joints on the right side 4 weeks ago screwed me over. When I got to the hub bolt it was lose. I unscrewed it with my fingers... So I think he forgot to tighten it. I am not to happy.
My fualt, I should have stated it was. I havent done them before and think I read a how to on 4wd. I am prety sure where I am at now I should be able to beat the hub off, but this thing Is going to have to wait for day light now. 8)

^pretty much. the early years 2wd had a standard 2 piece inner/out tapered bearing that only costs about $10. the later years 2wd used the same sealed hub concept as the 4wd, and the damn things cost a bundle and bolt in from the rear. i'm not quite sure how the 2wd spindle plays into this, but anyway...
assuming its exactly like the 4wd, remove the big axle/spindle nut, and loosen the 3 12pts in the rear. put a socket over the heads of the 3 nuts and smack on them with a hammer to push the bearing assy out of the knuckle. caution - this will ruin your socket. (or get sacrificial bolts and beat directly on their heads) another trick is to put a socket and extension over the heads and put the other end against a solid point, crank the truck and use the power steering to push against the bolts.
use lots of penetrating oil around the bearing assy and let it soak over night. its the rust that's got it stuck in the knuckle. cover everthing with anti-seize before reassembly.
