Default Shock extensions

DIY if jasonw sees fit.

I bought new shocks shortly before I decided to put 2.5" coil spacers on my truck.
I didn't want to buy another set of shocks that are designed for a lift and I figured that it would be better for the current shocks if they weren't extended 2.5" more then the manufacturer intended so I came up with a plan.

I first noticed these shock extensions on summitracing.com

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MRG-1290/

They seemed perfect but there was a hitch, the threads are 3/8" x 24

I measured my shocks and found out that the threads are 1/2" x 13 so those wouldn't work.

So I came up with these

That is a coupling nut and a 1/2 x 13 x 3" bolt.

I threaded the bolt about 1/3 the way into the coupling nut and used red loctite, then let it sit for a few days to make sure the loctite set up good before installation.

Before I installed them I cut the head of the bolt off with a Dremel and cleaned up the threads on the end.

Then I took the top bolt and washers/grommets off the shock, pushed it down and used a piece of rope run through the coil spring to hold it in place.
Then all I had to do was thread the new extension onto the top of the shock, put the washer and grommet on the extension and let it ride back into the shock tower to install the top grommet/washer/bolt.

Are the 2wd and 4wd stocks the same threads in the front? If so, i'll buy a pair from you.

It depends on the shock. A dial caliper will tell you what size threads your shocks have.

I appreciate the info. I've just been spending way too much time in the autozone parking lots every weekend changing shocks.

are you over-extending (popping) them and burning up the warranty?
