I believe their is a back panel that you can open up to repair your tailgate. I have never looked at dodges but I know fords have one. It would be right where your bedliner covers your tailgate if you have one.

Very hard to explain, but this is what "fixed" mine:

On mine, there was a tab on the side of the tailgate, next to the bed where the bed and tailgate attach on each side. Sometimes, one of the tabs would stay in a certain position that would make the tailgate stay "locked" to the bed, even when the handle is pulled. The fix is to move the tab back into an unlockable position using a screwdriver or similar tool.

This problem wasn't completely fixed however, it would still lock if I shut the tailgate hard enough. But I was okay with that, seeing as it as kind of an anti-theft device for things in the bed.

I can provide pictures tomorrow if this isn't clear enough.

Awesome! If it really bothers you, you can just replace that metal piece. What I did was just leave it, and close it really lightly so only one side is in position. Then I can open it with the handle. When I want it to lock, or when I'm not going to be using it, I shut it hard so it locks. Make sure to have a screwdriver with you just in case.
