Default Starting Issues

Hey new guy here. I have a 99 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 5.9L Magnum V8. It started about a few weeks ago when trying to start it would click once and do nothing. Then I would turn it of and do it a few more times and it would finally turn over and start. About two days ago it finally went out on me and I was at the store and a lady gave me a jump even though I thought it was the starter and amazingly enough it started. Once I got it home though it died and have not been able to get it to start. So I replaced the battery today checked all the cables and the fuses and everything is in good condition and it still won't start and the battery I replaced had been in my truck six years. So I am worried that it might be the starter. Any ideas of what it could be?

def a starter. try beating the starter with a hammer a bit and see if it helps, sometimes it will be enough to make it work again for a small while. you said you checked all connections and grounds right.

Yea I checked all the grounds and they are connected. I had issues with the grounds in the past which made me think to check them.

+1 on the starter. Mine had the exact same symptoms of just clicking and nothing happening. Then a few more tries and it starts. I suggest getting a new one ASAP because one of these times it's going to not start at all i'm sorry to say.

If you can't afford a new one now, just go to the bone yard and get one for 25 bucks as a temp. Then take it to O'rielys or autozone and have it tested to make sure it's good.

Those things ain't cheap either. I know not something most people like to hear, but I paid $150 (after turn in cost) plus for mine I think and that was the cheapo one. Compared to the $40 (after turn in cost) ones for my jeep.

+1 on that! I paid around $180 for mine when it bit the dust. It was an Autolight...a new one, not a reman. There was a $20 difference from the remaned to the new one, so I said why not?!

On the plus side it is prolly the easiest thing to change on this truck, 2 bolts (maybe three) its been about a year since I did mine. An annoying clip to move and your done.
