If you plan on offroading and drive anything like me a open air filter like the edelbrock or the 14x3's will get water and mud caked all over, either the stock setup with a K&N or a CAI like mine would be better because they are more water and mud resistant
I don't know anything to very little about K&N air filters got my dodge ram Sat 4/17/10 after getting it hm from the car lot i ck'ed on the air filter at least i tried had to buy a manual just to find out how to get the K&N housing off & loose enough to get to the filter witch had a k&n filter in it dirty as all get out pretty much black, Google it to see how to clean, said to soak in simple green and let it dry for a few hrs so as a result i threw it away and bought a Fram & dropped it in the price they want for a k&n filter is ridiculous if you ask me.Myself i like Fram ,AC Delco ,WIX haven't done the oil chg yet but that and ck on tuneup next but getting an est of 15+mpg conceal said when cruse set @70 was 18mpg not bad I'm used to a v6 vortec in my old chevy trk i got 500mil to a tank of gas 32gal tank ..if you keep up on your mait' i think fram, wix or ac delco does just fine although i just recently went from reg oil to full synthetic 5w30 in our 99 grand am se and doing real good so going to synthetic in the trk too & for about the same cost
I run a Purolator paper filter in mine. Probably cost me more over the long run versus the K&N, but the ease of changing them (not having to clean) is more important to me. I can tell by looking at my throttle body too which one filters better, and it isn't the K&N.
I run the Edlebrock 13x3 with a K&N. This replacement occured after having the stock air box and a drop in K&N. Never ran a dyno but I like the 13x3 better (my physchological??). Anyway, the Edlebrock came with a paper filter so I saved it in the K&N box to swap when the clean the K&N... keeps me on the road.
