Default KN&N air filter

I have a 97 dodge ram and was wondering what kind of improvements youve noticed after putting in a KN&N air filter? Also what is the best cold air intake for a second generation 1500 5.2L?

I've ran lots of different air intake systems. 14x3/CAI and such. I find the stock box with a K&N drop in filter gave me the best results.

Round filter was the best of the ones I tried, which included stock, stock with K&N drop in filter, Airraid CAI, and K&N FIPK CAI.

Do a search, this is probably one of the most covered topics in this section.

Agreed, I have tried them all as well, Stock box with the K&N drop in definitely gave me the best results as well. If you have some more motorwork like Silver, then I would go 14x3 to get some more air flowing.

The only problem I have with the 14x3 is that you get more air but unless you have a scoop or aftermarket hood it's going to be hot air. I like the stock box because you get cold air without spending 200+ on a CAI.

I agree, that, and the fact that I tow 3-4 times a week, and the stock setup provides more power down low than the 14x3 did, at least for me. I did notice the 14x3 provided more power from 3k RPM on up, but to me that's pointless for everyday driving. Plus, for what it is worth, Laramie1997 did some experimenting at the track, and found that with the stock airbox off he ran a slower 1/4 mile time than he did with the stock air box on with K&N drop in.

On our trucks, more air is better though regardless of temp because we don't have mass air flow sensors and we have a plenum style intake. The only exception is if you go with a ram air setup, in which case you get the best of both worlds - lots of air, and a slight difference in temp.

I agree, the FIPK, even with the bigger filter and all that fancy baffling didn't run as well as my 14x3, hot or cold.
I believe the stock air box with a K&N drop in is the best for stock or mildly modified trucks, or someone who drives in water or mud often. The factory air box system is pretty water resistant.
