Default Transfer Case Help Crazy

A couple of weeks ago my son was driving down the road in his 01 Ram Off Road Edition when the rear end locked up and shelled the rear end, drive shaft, transfer case and trani. $$$$ I ended up by a 2000 ram rebuilder for the parts. I used a mechanic with a great rep and a week later it was ready to go. When I took off the truck was in 4 wheel drive but the *** on the transfer case showed it was in two wheel drive. All the way forwards is 2 wheel, next is N and then high and low 4. How and the heck does the transfer case not match the shift ***? When I pulled the parts off of the 2000 found everything had been rebuilt already, gears, trani etc. What the heck is going on? The transfer case can only shift one way. I also noticed that you cant shift from 4 wheel to 2 wheel unless the truck is not moving or just creeping? Everything seems to be working but after spending a grand on labor I am afraid something was done incorrectly but damn if I can figure it out. Someone help before I loose my mind.

i've read that the shifter location/linkage is different in the early years vs the later years. your 2000 parts truck might have been retrofitted and been overlooked in the swap.

be aware that you can shift 2 Hi to 4 Hi when moving, but its normal to have to stop, or almost stop to shift to 2 Lo.

my 01 is 2 Lo when the shifter is pushed all the way forward, and 4 Hi when all the way back to the rear.

I dont think there was any retrofit on the linkage; Wonder if the old transfer case was in 2 wheel drive and the new one was set to four wheel drive and the mechanic just adjusted the linkage to make it work?

Yea but that doesnet make much sense. I know my cases had matching numbers and the parts truck was a 2000 and the good truck a 2001. Maybe someone rebuilt it and changed the pattern for some reason. I am still betting the linkage was installed wrong.
