Default P0305 code (again)

My son bought a 2001 5.9 2500 4X4 that had the CEL on. It was getting a P0305. I read the other threads on this code. I cleared the code with my reader and it threw it again in about 5 minutes. Rerouted the plug wire per the TSB and same thing. Did a compression check and most cylinders were 135-145 but # 5 was 35-40. I think the coolant went done about 1/2 cup from when I checked it last week.We pulled the head and the gasket doesn't look like it was cracked. I don't see any visible signs of a crack in the head. Is this something that a shop needs to check to detect? Thanks for your help.

Unhappy It's the heads...

Took the heads to a machine shop today and they magnafluxed them and said both heads have extensive cracks.. He quoted me $400 apiece for an aftermarket head (said the Chrysler head is junk) and was supposed to call back with the full price for valve job, etc. but I haven't heard from him. I found a site http://www.ramscyl.com/ that has the complete head for $325 or $600 for the pair. Is this the correct head and has anyone ever heard of this place or purchased from them?

Thanks for your help.

your machine shop guy is right - the heads are junk.

that is the correct head.
you can do a little better in price. example below. also see clearwater heads.

this one is unclear. he says Magnum, but then lists 1983-2004. call him first. price is good $550/pair

clearwater. $300/ea

what you want -
94-01 5.2/5.9 Magnum heads, not the older years LA 318 (1960's-70-80).
NEW, redesigned/heavier castings, not rebuilt.
Fully loaded with valves and springs.
some people prefer performance heads with larger 2.02 valves. they're more expensive.

what you don't want.
used.
rebuilt
OEM castings (thin)
bare heads w/o valves and springs.
pre 1994 LA 318/360
