Default Crank and Rod reconditioning

My Baby blew her oil pump and there went the engine. Everything looks goods except the crank and rods. Number one two and three rods are rainbow from overheating. I went to a "Speed Shop" for an analysis of my crank and rods. For $300.00 they will recondition my crank and rods. What do you think?

It's not unheard of, but the shop better know damn sure what they're doing. You'll be running different main bearings and the like than what is stock, so you'll need know what they recommend, and I'd have them do the assembly work and warranty it so if it grenades, it's on them.

It'll more than likely be well over $300 when it's all said and done, so unless you're looking to hot rod this thing, I'd start calling around for a junk Yard engine and see what the difference is.

Don't bother calling the dealership on those parts, unless you donated a kidney to the owner. You'd pay the same for a forged set by the time they get done bending you over.

if its a daily driver some sacrificeso may be made. you can band aid the problem till she has time to go down for a transplant or do what im doing and get a donor motor and build it slowly over time and put your nickels and dimes into it and have a bulletproof motor when your done, either way you go be sure we will be here to give you all the info we can.

I would just get a junkyard motor. Most trucks in the boneyard are there because of collisions and tranny failures.

I saw a motor in Lawton OK where the valvecovers had BRAND NEW bar codes on them. Leads me to believe that the engine was replaced recently. The junkyard knew that and they told me 750 for the engine and labor to swap it and a 90 day warranty. Damn good deal.

With the mods listed in your signature I would not use any rods that got hot enough to discolor them. If the crank shows no signs of discoloring and will clean up by turning no more than .010 I would reuse it.

Thanx yall for your input. It took me over eight months to OH & Blueprint my engine and some $, but it was well worth it and so much fun. Now it is time to do it again. My crank is already undersized 0.025" on the main and rods journals. With all all your input, which really helped me out a lot, I am going to look for a fresh 318 crank and rods and rework them per Engine Blueprinting Specs as I did with my OEM engine. Some people tell me to go with a short block, but i can not. I want to see what is going on my baby. Thanks for your input, It has really helped me out. I LOVE DODGE FORUM!
