Several members here have rebuilt their tranny's themselves. If you look in the DIY section, there is a thread there by J415 that has LOTS of good resources for ya.

To the original poster... if you're not willing to possibly put up the money for a transmission rebuild, as others have suggested, I'd find a better deal.
Umm, last time I check i only made 42k last year. As far as mommy n daddy's money....nope been married with children for almost 10yrs. I got bills too, bro. I just don't see the logic behind buying a piece of junk n sinking thousands into it on a regular basis, just to keep it reliable. Buy a newer truck with a warranty, u won't b sorry. Promise.

I have a nice truck, not because I live off of my parents money, but because I work hard for a living, n buy the things I need and want. Thanks for the prejudice though. Much appreciated.

I just dont see why you think your post is helpful...We are not all fortunate enough to not have money probs. Alot of us cant afford a truck payment to go along with all of our other worries. But i guess you can..But we are not you. And maybe we dont like the newer trucks. I sure dont like the direction dodge went with the body of the newer trucks..IMO they are ugly. Thats why curtain people like the 2nd gen ram. IMO the best looking truck out there. And i would buy a newer ram if i was loaded with $$..Id just put it all into mine or another 2nd gen ram. No offense intended. BACK TO TOPIC!!!!!! Lets dont ruin this guys thread. Oh and by the way, i have a nice truck too. And so do all the other 2nd gen owners here.

A truck with 265K miles........ Before plunking down my 1200 bucks, I would be very tempted to spend some money on inspections.... Trans, pull the diff covers, check ALL steering parts, etc. "Thorough" wouldn't even begin to cover it. You might spend a couple hundred, but, you may also find that the truck does/doesn't have even more issues, than just high mileage.

Its a gamble, no doubt about it. Just depends on what ya wanna do, and what resources you have for maintaining it. If you can do a lot of the work yourself, that makes life much simpler.

When I buy a used vehicle, ANY used vehicle, I fully EXPECT to have to sink 500+ into it to get it up to snuff. (and I plan for this accordingly when I purchase....) I can do a fair bit of the work myself though, and for the really in-depth stuff, have a shop available for use. (on the weekends...) So, on you really. You should expect that a high mileage truck IS going to nickel and dime you for a while.

Definitely agree with that. I bought my 95 model a year and a half ago with 236k, paid 1200 for it. And it ran horrible. Within a week and a half it had a full tuneup, all new ball joints/tie rods/etc, heater core, and a few other things (all done my be). It turned in to a totally different truck after that, and has been reliable ever since. Only problem I've had was a bad battery, and that was just recently. I may have been one of the lucky ones, who knows. So if you do plan on buying it, also plan on sinking some more cash into it in the beginning. Depending on the issues the truck has, it could be well worth the money. Good luck.

Yeah, I have suffered from 'bad battery syndrome'..... Shortly after I bought my truck, the GF and I went out collecting rocks from farmers fields. (with the blessings of the farmers.....) Only had the truck for about two days..... So, park truck on side of road, turn on hazard flashers, collect rocks, move on to next location. Lather, rinse, repeat.... Until... We had been at it a couple hours, got in to move to the next spot, hit the key and...... click click click click.... and that was it. Ooops. Walk to the nearest farmhouse, and call home for the roadside rescue team to come an give us a jump. Drove DIRECTLY to battery wholesale, and got a new one installed.

Man, that sucks! Mine died on me while I was listening to the radio while building a fence at home. About the 4th time of having to jump start it to go get supplies, I decided it was time to get a new one. It was from 2007 anyways.

Been down the fuel pump route too. Fun job, to say the least lol. Did your fuel level sending unit go out before hand or just the pump?

Wasn't trying to be rude, just giving my .02. I know quite a few people who have had that "dont want any car payments" mentality, n while they may not have regular, monthly, car payments they spend more money each year replacing parts or what have u. Me, I bought my truck used (6k miles original) in 06. Have zero issues, one time it went into the shop, but just for warranty work (recall). I have not had any maintenance issues with it since I bought it. Change the oil regularly n drive carefully. But hey, I'm the corporate executive who makes over 100k a year. Lol. No, I'm a cop. N u all should know how underpaid we are, especially for laying my life on the line, daily, for people such as urself.

To the original poster, I'm sorry that I "hi-jacked" ur thread. I'm certainly no terrorist, but hey. Lol. I still say if u are able to find a good used truck, buy it. If u can't, n u have a steady job, buy something new or slightly used, like I did. I certainly didn't come to the "2nd Gen" section to lore u over to the 3rd Gen, darkside. Lol. In the end as long as ur happy, that's all that matters. U have to drive ur truck, not me or anyone else on here. Do what u want n with whichever truck mikes u happy!
Sorry for all the ruckuss. Not much of a "Peace Officer" around this thread. Sorry guys.
