Default Another ball joint question

My truck is a 2000 4x4, 108,000. It still has the original ball joints on it, but a friend of mine said they are getting to the point where they should be replaced. I was just curious as to how long they last? And if "getting bad" is bad enough to replace em, or can they wait?

Jack up the front end of your truck. Shake the tire. (top to bottom) if it move, they are bad, and need to be replaced. Broken ball joints while driving is the very definition of 'un-fun'.
