Default Another squeak problem thread

Did a search and didn't find a matching problem with an answer, so...

I started hearing a squeak in my 1997 1500 today. It was sitting still in my driveway.

The sound was coming from under the body, about 1/2 way between the front & rear tires. I swear it sounded like it was coming from the exhaust pipe about 2 feet in front of the muffler although the sound could have just been traveling to that area from somewhere else. The entire exhaust system was solid & didn't move when I shook, hit, & kicked at it.

I didn't hear it when I was under the engine nor when I was under the rear end.

Ideas?

If I didn't already welcome you, welcome to DF.

Squeaks in vehicles are funny. Sounds travel, bounce off things, and sound like they are where they are not.

I'd say look at the obvious first. When was the last time you replaced your serpentine belt?

i'll bet $1 its the worn out bushings in the auto trans linkage. right under drivers feet, where the up/down rod meets the front/back rod. just grease the bushings.

or, its the drive shaft u-joints gone dry and bad.

it could be the gas tank rubbing on the bed too. Let the tank get down to 1/4 or so and get under there and try to move the tank up and down and forward/backward to see if it'll squeak.

Could be the rear brake cable the adjuster is under the drivers door.

I had my spare tire making a funny squeak under the truck and it had me stumped for the longest time. Just had to tighten the cable up holding it in place.

The gas tank and transmission linkage could still be what is making the noise because there is a little vibration throughout the entire truck from the engine running.
