Default Plenum Question

Im curios if any of you has replaced their plenum and used the same pan? Did it hold up, and for how long? I did mine about 3 yrs and at least 50 thousand miles ago with no issue's, but that was only before I knew about other altenatives.

you cant use the same pan....its made of a different metal that the manifold (manifold- aluminum and Pan-Steel) and different metals expand at different temps, thus causing the plenum to blow out.

Also the factory bolts holding the pan on, cannot be torqued to spec for they are a little to long...thus another reason EVRYONE will have their plenum blow out.

you can get a hughes kit (comes with 1/4in thick aluminum plate, new bolts, and gasket) for $86.00 +shipping... http://hughesengines.com

or get one from APS Precision. http://apsprecision.com

if you dont use one of the two, then dont bother...these kits make it so you dont have to worry about it again.

Make sure you dont have the deathflash either, or you will need a tuner after the plenum job to eliminate the deathflash...

Mine is still fine... My computer was rebuilt years ago by an independent shop. The bolts were replaced and the new ones were shorter.
It sounds like if you tried to torq the original bolts to specs the bolts would snap..

yes, but they are still two different metals...the stock pan is junk, get rid of it, or you'll be doing this again

i dont doubt that it did it good, but the fact that ones steel and ones aluminum makes a hell of a difference...just the smallest seep past the gasket can make it run like crap, and the stock pan is very thin...the hughes kit is like 8x thicker, and made of the same aluminum as the manifold.
