318 guys please

My dad went to a 360 (not by choice) when his 318 let go at 220,000 miles. He's hated it ever since. Before he could pull 11-12 MPG around down, now he's averaging 8-9 and he says the power difference isn't very noticeable. With the 3.55 gears he says it seems to pull harder on the interstate now though.
He IS still running the 318 PCM though. I told him from the beginning it would run but it would run lean and the fuel mapping would be off. I'm curious how much of a difference the correct 360 PCM will make.

A 318 has a shorter stroke than a 360. Shorter stroke = quicker rev. A 318 will reach upper RPM's faster than a 360. More of the available horsepower gets to the wheels faster in a 318. That's a good thing for the red light bandits out there.
A 318 camshaft lift is .432, a 360 camshaft lift is .410. That's a significate difference folks fail to note when they ask if 1.7rr make a big difference. It makes a bigger difference on a 318.
The compression ratio on a 318 is 9.1:1, a 360's compression ratio is 8.9:1. Higher compression =more HP, a 318 gains a bit more with every mod you add to it vs. the 360.
A stock 2001 318 puts down 230hp max from the factory, a stock 2001 360 puts down 245hp max. simply swapping 1.7 rockers in will put a 318 over the 360, and you'll get to that power quickly.
When you start modding heavily, there's no substitute for the power to be gained by the added cubes of the 360, but that's only going to really shine if you boost it, spray it, certain cams, or get into changing pistons to alter compression ratios. otherwise, the 318 will more than likely respond better to the average joe bolt ons.
There is are 2 basic stroker kits for the 318 block: the 340 stroker kit and the 390 kit. The 340 kit isn't as popular, but I'll bet that's a pretty darn dependable little stroker that could take some abuse without the fears of it's longer arm cousin.

Better yet, I believe Hemifever can rewrite a 318 PCM to 360 specs with an SCT. I think he's selling canned tunes for $275 now, which is just a bit more than a new 360 PCM.
DO IT, DO IT, DO IT, DO IT!

You so smart!
I will add my 2-cents -- Love my 318. Dependable and easy to maintain.
