Unhappy Blew out transmission 30 min. ago.

Just blew out the transmission. It wont shift out of first, and the reverse wont kick in sometimes. Should I just get a new one, rebuild this one, or buy an insured one from FM 600 they have 500+ transmissions with 90 day warranty.

If I do buy a new one or used one how much should I pay for each. I dont wanna pay more than I have too right now.

New they run right around 2000 bucks. Give or take a couple hundred, depending on whether it is stock, or not.....

Used, you shouldn't pay more than 500 bucks. Adjust that price for your area. (plus or minus around 250 or so)

Rebuilding is an option..... doing it yourself is another option. Several members on here have done their own, (check J415's thread in the DIY forum) with great success.

Paying someone else to do it will be anywhere from 700, to 1700, depending on what you have them do. (if you bring them a trans, or the whole truck, some shops won't warrant their work if you do the install.....)

Transmissions are not a cheap repair by any stretch of the imagination...... How much do you wanna spend, and how do you mostly use your truck?

Got my "new" trans out of the junkyard. Cash 4 Clunker truck so I had better odds than a regular boneyard pick. $100 for the trans,, got a new converter, fluid, filter, and seals, I was back in action for under $400.

I rebuilt my own. It cost me around $500 (I had to replace my OD unit entirely since I blew it to pieces). The shop wanted $2200. In the end, I gained a lot more then just some extra money in my pocket. I learned my tranny inside out. Now I can do my own tranny work/upgrades at my leisure. That is a great feeling, and to be blunt, priceless. This is the first tranny I ever laid hands on. You can do it, if you have the patience.

if time and money can spare, the best way to do is buy a spare and build it on your own time then when the time comes to swap it you will be ready. thats what im doing with my motor.

my tranny took on water a few weeks ago, and it wouldnt come out of first, and was slipping bad....i flushed it 5 times, changed filter and TPS, and my tranny shifts like new again...but mines not stock, my tranny was rebuilt for towing....

try doing a fluid/filter change, and see if it helps....

I took a look at it and only 1st gear will go for sure, 2nd and third stick every now and then, when put in neutral it will make and real wierd noise. Its like a cross between a quack and a bark and its really quick. There is also a huge stain of some sort of fluid that is most likely ATF. The leak and noise are both coming from directly between the engine and transmission. Any suggestions?
