Question AC / Issues and Fan Mystery?

I know my compressor is going bad and I'm babying it. I was able to buy a vacuum pump from Harbor freight not the best in quality but it worked. I was able to find a couple leaks in the hose connections so I replaced the O rings. But it's just a matter of time before the compressor goes out. And when it happens I'll replace it.

But the weird thing is my fan just turnes off without notice. Then about 20 or 30 minutes down the road starts working again. Any thoughts on what this could be? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Failing fan, failing switch. Loose connection. Bad resistor block. Bad ground.....

just a heads up you dont wanna let the compressor go out on you if its the bearing, if the bearing locks up thats not gonna be good.

HeyYou
Thanks for the info

Where would you start? If it's the switch is it pretty easy to replace. If it is the fan you have to remove the dash and everything to replace it correct.

I would check to see if you have power at the fan when it is NOT working first. (and of course, now that you want it to not work, it will work perfectly....)

You can pull the resistor block, and visually inspect it, if it is broke, it will be pretty obvious.

If both of those are ok, check for loose connections at the switch. Not sure how it comes out.... I think the only thing you need to remove to get to it, is the dash bezel, and that may or may not have a couple screws here and there holding it in. (around the ash tray? cup holder?) Once that is out of the way.... probably just a couple screws.

No it's not the bearings. It has a small leak in it. And right now the Freon with the leak sealer is working. But about every two weeks I have to recharge the unit. This is the original unit that came with the truck and it has 210,000+ miles on it. I don't feel that bad that I have to replace it. You can get a new one online anywhere from $250 on up. I wish I didn't have to spend the money on it right now. But that is life with my Dodge Truck.
