Where to Start?
Hey everyone I recently purchased a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Sport. It's regular cab and short bed. I also have a 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer GTS but me and my girlfriend needed another vehicle and I needed something for work. The truck was $2400 has 166,300 miles. Has a rebuilt tranny and replaced heater core and front assembly hub all done at a professional shop. The tires right now are 245/75R16. It also has a Y-Pipe off the headers with what I believe is Flowmaster 40 dual tips. It is pretty loud but I like it
When you start it up in the morning it sounds like the serpentine belt is squealing a bit but then goes away once driving. I will soon probably be replacing that. I also believe it might be burning off a little bit of oil out the tailpipes. I cannot smell it at all in the cabin but if I rev it up a little bit then go and stand at the back I can smell it. Checked the dipstick and oil levels seem to be fine. I dont know if this may be the plenum? Any other ideas on what else it could be and what all I should check? I just want the truck to remain reliable as can be. What all should I start with and also what should I check?

yup, first thing you should do is check in your intake for oil. You mentioned plenum so I assume you at least KNOW about the issue there, search it and you'll find a million threads related to it. Also have a look at your PCM on the passenger side of the firewall for a sticker saying 'Authorized Chrysler Software Update' or similiar. This is the deathflash that is common on the newer 2nd gens, it's Dodge's shoddy way of covering up the plenum issue by detuning the engine so it doesn't knock and ping...
Those are just the first 2 things you should check out, stay tuned for more
And welcome to DF!

WELCOME TO THE FORUM!!
check plenum as above
do a fresh tune up cap, rotor, wires plugs
get a tuner to get rid of the death flash for some new power
this is also a good place to start also

Thanks for the warm welcome guys! Yes I already looked and I do have DeathFlash. Right now however I am going to focus on getting this oil thing taken care of and getting that right. I plan on doing a fresh tune and the oil thing. It's just my work truck right now. We need it to last about two years or so until we're financially better. I dont have the money for a new tuner to get rid of DF right now because I will be buying a engagement ring within the next week or two. Popping the question soon so that takes some money. I will buy one in a few months. I just need to know where I should start to make it as reliable as possible
If my truck seems to be burning a little bit of oil when I'm driving it but I cannot see any oil drip spots when the truck sits parked. The truck does seem a little sluggish and I know I have DF is this most likely a blown plenum? When I get home I plan on inspecting the Air Filter for oil and looking down the throttle body
yup you will have a bad plenum, they all do (or did at least)... have a look down there with a flashlight just to be sure, but I'll bet you see oil...
