Mythbusters (the television show) claims that running a net will improve fuel efficiency above running with the tailgate open. But they're not always the most logical bunch and quite often their methods aren't as scientific as they believe them to be.

I have seen a couple different studies on that.... (along with running the a/c, vs. having the windows rolled down.....) and the results were..... Inconclusive. They could not get repeatable results, and the differences were generally only a point or two......

Same for A/C vs. Windows in case you are wondering......

So, what's the verdict? It just doesn't matter. Our trucks get crappy gas mileage no matter what.

As for the bed sides shaking themselves loose.... that makes a certain amount of sense really, the tailgate would prevent them from flopping around too much.... a net wouldn't.... Who knows.

I never did like the look or function of those net gates... Start calling junk yards for prices. Most in my area (Manitoba Canada) want $100 for a tailgate. You might get lucky and find a color matched one, or have to grab a can of duplicolor and paint it yourself. What is the net style one worth anyway? (haha google is my friend! (37 bux)

Either way, I would go with steel over net any day but ultimately the choice is yours.
