i neeed help
i recently acquired a 97 ram 1500 2wd with a 5.2 auto. when i got it it would not idle once iit warmed up. the previous owner had these items replaced plugs, wires, dist cap, spark plugs, air filter, and computer. all of those did not help. i just recently replaced the plenum gasket which seemed to help for about twenty minutes. then it started not idling in park. next it wouldnt idle in reverse. so i read on here about havin to drive it to relearn the ecu. well about ten miles into it today it wouldnt idle at stop signs and it would shut off when slowing down. well 49 miles into it i stopped for lunch and it would idle in drive but not in park. i cut it off and ate lunch. got back on the road and at 109 miles it idle in every gear and park. i shut it off went inside for an hour came back out drove it a few miles and it shut off slowing down, and at idle in every gear. its throwing no codes and i dont know where to look. any help is greatly appreciated
does it run ok if you press on the gas pedal just a little.
if so - clean the IAC well on the back of the throttle body to make sure the little hole at the end is open. you can poke a wire or screwdriver through it.
if you want to experiment a little, you can reset pcm by disconnecting negative battery cable and turning on headlights for 30 seconds to discharge the memory. this likely happened during you downtime for plenum repair. this resets everything to default settings. i doubt this will help any.
if that's ok, then replace IAC. if that doesn't help replace TPS. they're about $40-50 each at local parts store. reset pcm when installing new parts.

ok. i just figured it would. my scanner has a test for the iac and according to the test it was responsive. the test was making it idle up or down using the scanner and it worked. however im not an expert on dodges never had this much trouble figuring a vehicle out. just dont want to spend alot of money on the wrong parts.
sounds like a nice scanner. i've had idle problems several times, and have gotten to where i keep extra parts including any old ones that turn out to not be the problem. once or twice my iac was actually bad. 3 times it was the tps.

my dad owns a shop so its what he uses at work. ive been checkin on here and everything that normally causes this problem i have fixed or checks out on the scanner. the front 02 sensor has a high voltage i believe but im insure if this would cause the idle problem. im basically stumped.
