Question 08 Ram hemi.....Piglet????

I am looking at buying a 2008 Ram with the powerful hemi. A buddy of mine say's the 08's were real pigs on gas, is this true?? Is the 2010 better on fuel than the 08?
I have been feeding the petro to my o'l 95, 318 gas guzzler for fifteen years & I don't want to continue doing that with my next truck!!
If anyone knows the mpg comparison of the two, please let me know.
I really need to know if it is worth spending the extra 17 grand to buy new!
Thanks!!!

Numbers are all over the place from what I see online. Anywhere from 9 or so in town, to 17 and some change for mostly in town, and some highway. Driving style is going to come into play here as well...... If you constantly hot rod it, you can expect single digit fuel economy numbers. If you drive like my grandma, you can probably get in the higher end of the range.......

One owner that was doing at best high single-digit fuel numbers, replaced his O2 sensors, and immediately saw a gain.....

Elevation, fuel quality/content, truck configuration, etc, are all going to have a role to play here. If you drive a big *** truck, don't expect 20 miles per gallon.

I think it is to be honest.

I have been around the new trucks a lot in the last few months, and I can tell you next to your 318, the hemi is easy on gas.

I've typically seen about 15-16 MPGs in town and about 18-21MPGs out on the hwy.

This goes for the new rams and the 08s.

I just got back from a 1400 mile trip with a 2009 CCSB ram 1500 hemi with 3.55 gears (4wd). The truck averaged about 15MPGs out on the highway with a load of 6,700 on the ball. on the way home, it averaged about 18.9MPG unloaded. Of course, this truck has been tuned, but it still is impressive to make the kind of power that the truck does and still get the miles. Was not prepared for the ram to have the guts to easily pass at highway speeds with that kind of a load on. If it hadn't been for the truck squatting down and the nose up in the air, you could easily forget that the truck was even loaded at all.

To me, it's totally worth getting the newer truck.

So is the 2010 better on fuel than the 08 & if so how much better?? If it is relatively close than I will go for the 08 & use the extra money saved to dress it up, but if the difference is substantial, I will have to spend the bucks & go new.
Did they do anything different to make the 2010 more efficient?
Thanks for any & all opinions, facts or just by own experience!!

More efficient between the two? I don't really think that there is much difference. The difference comes about in terms of power.

08's are rated at 345-375 depending on who you ask and the 09+ is rated at 390. I am a firm believer in the idea that the more power you can make from the factory, the more you can gain from your mods. Based on a 17%-20% drivetrain loss, it wouldn't take that much in mods to get yourself back up to the 390 mark, but instead of that rating at the crank, you'll have that at the wheels.
