Default Brake switch mechanical question

No brake lights come on. So I changed out the brake light bulbs, checked all the fuses. I removed the brake light switch from it's home position, still pluged in, and the brake lights came on and stayed on. I unplug the old brake switch and lights go out.
So I plug the new switch in and nothing... push in the plunger, nothing.
Now when I bought the new switch it was already opened. I was told there was nothing wrong with it. Well I took it back.
Now for my question I read some where that the brake switch calibrates itself. Was I worng in taking it back. Or should it work from the get go.

The brake switch is self calibrating. ONCE. If someone else tried it, and it didn't work to fix their problem, and brought it back........ it's done.

You were correct in returning it, and getting a different (unopened) one.

I thought I'd come back and post my success and what I did. If you take the three screws out at the knee panel you get full view of the brake light switch. It had been posted you would have to be a contortionist. Not if you take that panel out. It sure made it an easy fix. Finally something easy.
Thanks Obie
