Default towing 3500lbs with OD on or off on highway?

2001 ram 1500 sport, automatic

I'll be towing a trailer with total weight 3500 lbs for about 8 hours freeway driving.

once it's up to 65 mph, and on cruise, can I turn OD back on??

Welcome to DF.

No, I would highly recommend against it. OD is meant for no extra weight cruising. You put OD on with that kind of load, you are asking for transmission problems. Even if it is not now, definitely later down the road.

leave it off unless your destination is Monte's transmission shop in Summerville SC. Stock units have oiling and overheating problems with the OD unit.

As these fellas have already stated, I also highly recommend leaving the OD off while towing. The OD in these trannys are not designed for pulling any more than the weight of the truck itself... sometimes I think they cant even handle that

What I used to do to get out of the higher RPM's momentarily, is when driving down a long steep grade or hill I would slip it into to overdrive while it was mainly coasting. I'm not sure if this did any good or bad, but it kinda made me feel a little better.

I turn mine off as soon as I start the truck, just habit now but I hardly EVER use O/D at all, towing or not.
