no personal experience, but i think the official tool is a frame spreader. unofficial tools are a big hammer, or drive in a 4x4 or maybe rig up a bottle jack or an old fashioned bumper jack to spread the frame rails a tad.

Is the rubber isolator(not correct name) still attached to the crossmember or the tailshaft?
Remove it.
The crossmember needs to be installed from above & pulled down into position.
Should still have enough room to slide it in sideways then pull down with the isolator off.
Get all 4 bolts in one end(dont tighten) then persaude the other side down & get the other bolts in
Or just do what dhvaughan suggested & spread the frame,,,,,cant believe I said that lol

Well, when I replaced mine, i just used a big *** hammer, put it in catty-corner, and hit the hell out of it until it went into place. could do that, then take a spud and line it up to the bolt holes.

put it up above the back of the transmission where the frame is wider then tap it foward and down it goes in pretty easy this way

Here's the way I did it. I got a bottle jack and a 4 x 4 and installed it between the frame and pumped on the bottle jack until it freely went in. Just my 2 cents though...
