I have a 97 Ram 1500 4x4 with the 5.9. I blew a rear brake line a while back and ever since I replaced the line, the ABS and Brake lights won't go out on the dash. I reset my computer several times, I replaced the sensor on the rear pumpkin, I even changed the ABS module, I bled the brakes the old fashioned way (pumping), gravity, and even pressure bleeding. I still can't get the lights to go out. I have to get my truck inspected and it won't pass with these lights on. I have read almost every post on this site about this topic. Short of taking it into a shop to get fixed, I am just frustrated with this. I just don't understand how replacing a blown brake line didn't fix this. Any help would be appreciated.

Not losing any fluid. Pressure stayed steady when I did the pressure bleed.

 

Crack open one of the front bleeders, and STOMP on the pedal. Close it up, and see if the lights went out. (in Georgia)

Do your brakes feel good? Work good? Are the rears working??

Could it be the famous rear sensor on top of the rear diff. going bad?

 

Cruise up to your local autoparts store that has a code reader, and have 'em run the codes, see what it says.

If your brakes are working fine and you NEED to get those lights off now for inspection, you could always pull the gauge cluster out and remove those lights until it's inspected. This isn't the best idea because those lights are obviously referring to some problem somewheres, but if everything works fine you would most likely be ok...

 

I was thinking that there might have been an air bubble in the module so today I pressure bleed from the wheel cylinders. Still no luck. When I reset the computer I can let the truck run for a long time and no lights come on. They will come on after I drive for about 3 or 4 miles. I am going to see if any of my buddies have a code reader that can read ABS codes. All of the parts stores around here only use the readers that read the CEL codes. This thing is driving me crazy. All of this from simply replacing a brake line. Before I changed the brake line the lights never were on.

 

Got tired of messing with the ABS and Brake light issue and was pulling my multi function switch out and I discovered that there are removable bulbs for both the ABS and the Brake light. So I simply removed them so I can pass inspection. Once I get it inspected, I can worry about finding out what is actually wrong with it. When I discovered that the bulbs were removable I was caught by surprise because I read on the forum that on my truck the bulbs were not removable. So I guess that goes to show that you really have to see for yourself since there are so many differences between year models on these trucks.
