Default New guy, please help - drive train noise **now with pictures**

I have 2001 1500 5.9 4x4 Off Road 4.10 true track I think

112k miles

I have a whirring sound similar to if the rear drums were catching. I dont think it is the drums because it doesnt change/stop when brakes are applied.
On top of that I have developed a drive train whine. At first I thought it was the trans, but the noise is consistant with torque applied. Meaning that when the trans shifts the pitch of the whine does not. It stays constant when throttle is applied. The whirring sound is when the no throttle is applied.
These noises do not change when driving 40ish and popping into neutral.
Think its my diff? Think its the t-case?
Im about to change those fluids seeing that they probably have never been changed.

Any ideas?

Thanks
-Mark

Sounds like you may have a wheel bearing going out. May want to start checking there unless somebody else has any suggestions...

Only in 2wd and not in 4? Does it matter if you are turning? Were any fluids recently changed?

Coooouuuld be the rearend. If you do in fact have a LSD and it is wore out, or the fluid has broken down, or there was a change and no LSD fluid put in, it will make sounds similar to what you are describing.

Could also be a bad u-joint. Or maybe your t-case fluid is old. And then it is working your way forward to find it. IF you can get someone in the bed to hear where it might be coming from that might help.

Well........
I just pulled the rear diff cover and found this....

Im going to start calling shops tomorrow morning.
Anyone know a fair price they can throw at me so that I dont get hosed?
Does it look like just a master rebuild kit and labor?
The teeth look ok (to me) no missing chunks, but there was a good deal of metal powder in the oil.
It would make a cool paint job....metalic poop brown
