Cool 01 Half ton swap with 24 valve 5.9???

I Might have the opportunity in the next month or two to completly strip a 2007 Dodge Ram Mega Cab 24valve 5.9 cummins. I own an 01 dodge ram half ton extended cab short bed. Just out of my curiosity I was curious how hard it would be to drop the motor in the half ton and what I need? Understand the computer is different what to do? does the intercooler and random stuff like that still fit in the bay??? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's very simple. Sell your half ton, buy a heavy duty.

What RamSport suggested would probably be the cheaper route.

You'll also need to swap transmissions, and everything related to that (torque converter, etc.). Sensors are also different, so you'll have to do quite a bit of wiring in addition to swapping the computers around. You'd also have to beef up the front suspension quite a bit, those Cummins motors weigh quite a bit more than our gassers.

I Had one! It was a 2005 tricked out and the bank took it for I could not afford it anymore and paid cash for the 01. The Mega cab I can strip is going through the same thing. The guy is buying another dodge and wants me to instal a new tranny for him in it and give this one back to the bank. So all the parts suspension tanks intercooler, you know will be there. Just curious how the electrical will work?

if you want to it, the best route would be to find a 98-02 donor truck with either a 12v or 24v, all of the drive train componets will bolt in along with the intercooler, 2nd battery and all the diesel related stuff and the wiring is simply plug and play, tho a 3rd gen into a 2nd gen would be cool but a lot of work, fabrication, wiring and money will be required

That's what I was looking for. I have and can get tools for the fabrication but like all of you said sounds like a pain in the *** but would be kool. I was thinking this morning, with minimul fabrication, why not just take the body off the 01 short bed drop it on the chasis of the 3rd gen and strap a long bed on the rear of it.....food for thought i supose

you would probably end up with even more problems than the engine swap, you would need a diesel radiator and intercooler out of a 2nd gen truck, then make thoes connections, brake lines, steering, fuel tank filler, body mounts, and more i'm sure, and worst of all will be the electrical, the two trucks have completely different systems and would take a lot of time to get it right, in fact i'm getting a headache right now just tkinking about it, but anything can be done if you have the tools, money and skills, and if you want to do it i say go for it, it would definitly be a one of a kind... and the cool factor....
