Default Crunch!

Was out on a fire call, trying to find smoke in the tree's and went up a little trail. Trail was pretty nasty steep with a drop off on one side and a bank on the other. About 3/4 up i was watching my driver side and didnt see a rooty ball on the other side and ran it over. Put a pretty good dent in my lower rocker panel(right at the corner of my pass door) Dent took up about half the length of the rocker panel and all the width. Soo body shops want at least 300 to fix it. I went to a paint store and bought 100 bucks in supplies(bondo, sand paper, sanding blocks, and a gallon of hercuiliner black) To fix it all up with. Going to do the whole rocker part of my truck with herculiner and do both sides. Any tips on bondo work?..never done it. I will try and get some pics up here in a bit..

Josh

1. Layer bondo (do not gob it on all at once)
2. Some solvents will "melt" bondo and I know that herculiner has solvents in it

first off do not fill the whole thing with bondo, it will not last. if you were doing a used car for auction you could get away with that. the proper way to fix it is with a drill and slide hammer to bring the metal back out, and then mud (bondo) to smooth it back out. if you do not want to go that route and want to build it up, do yourself a favor and go get a quart of duraglass, if you are not familiar it is basically bondo with fiberglass strands mixed in. you can build with that stuff and it will last.

also if you do not have a da (dual action) sander, you are going to have your work cut out for you with just sanding blocks by hand. i personally would at least go get a little jitterbug palm sander before you tackle that project, you just make sure you do a really good job with your mud application first! good luck. post pics if you need any more advice, i do body work every day for a living.

Please tell me you do not plan on using bondo to fix that. Are yoy gonna try and pull the dent out, or just slap bondo in ther un till it looks good. That is a pretty nice size dent, spend the money and get it fixed right. I went to school for body repair and That needs to be pulled before any body filler is applied.

Have you thought of taking the panel off the door and banging it out a little? The dent is right behind the hole for the speaker.

Oh I will be hammering out as much as possible, then using a slide hammer to get it even closer. Last will be my bondo(using as little as possible)

make sure you pull that door panel off and use a 2x4 along with the hammer, that will disperse the energy as you pop the dent out and prevent you from making it worse. if you play your cards right you should not even need to use the puller i wouldnt think. make sure you pay attention to that body line and get that right, otherwise it will stand out like a sore thumb.
