Default Transmission question need answered asap please

hi all. i have a 2001 dodge ram 1500 4x4 with a 5.2(318). my transmission is on its way out and i was told i could only use a transmission out of either a 2000 or a 2001 ram 1500 with a 5.2. is that true or will other year transmission work? please let me know. im in a huge bind and i have a chance to pick up a trans from a 97 for 300 cheaper than a 2001 trans. thanks in advance.

There isn't much difference mechanically in the transmissions, just some wiring pinout changes from what I understand. But, can you use on older trans? On that, I am not sure. Would need diagrams for both to make that determination, and I don't have them for the older trans.

Bear in mind, there WERE some functional changes at the PCM level in the 98 model year, so, chances are, that it WON'T be a simple swap. Other stuff is going to have to happen as well.

From my understanding, and I could be wrong, the 94-97 trannies have an extra speed sensor in the tail shaft, and the 98-up don't.

I dont think that matters on the 4x4 version though, as the sensor would be in the rear output shaft on the t-case?

I guess I skimmed over the 4x4 part.

Post in MonteC's stickied thread up top. There are differences, IIRC but I can't tell you exactly what they are.

Uhhh.... Have you heard of a rebuilt tranny? Just sayin since it, and IMO anyways, sounds like a hassle to buy that 300 dollar tranny and drop it in making it a cheap and easy fix that wont last long.

well i ended up going with a 2001 transmission anyways..its got just over 100k on it and i picked it up for 700..i would have had it rebuilt but i dont have 1800-2200 bucks. my girlfriend bought me the transmission as a birthday present...i guess its not bad considering i turn 21 on saturday the 14th.
