Default 46RE trans problems

Hi everyone.
I am having some trouble with my 2000 Dodge Ram van 1500 5.2.
Transmission started slipping in 2nd. I couldn't really tell if it was slipping in 3rd because it was too hard to get past 2nd.
1st gear is pretty solid, and if I manuall shift from 1st to 2nd I still get slipping in second.
Reverse would shudder a little bit under a load or slight incline.
Long story short I tore the trans out and currently have it on the bench.
After disassembly, the pump specs were ok.
The front clutches seem ok with little wear. I haven't figured out how to disassemble the rear clutch yet.
The front and rear bands don't look too bad also, both have about 1/16" fiber on them.
I started disassembling the valve body and found the accumulator spring on the valve body broken and wrapped up into itself.
I'm just wondering if this was causing all of my problems from the start.
Any help would be great.
Thanks. Chris

If I recall correctly, the clutch is held together by a simple snap ring.

Is that the one with the huge powerful spring?

No, your thinking of the one in the overdrive unit...I'm drawing a blank on the name of that spring and it's gonna haunt me for the rest of the day.

Default 46re transmission problems

Thanks for all the info.
Dave that link was great and will prove helpful.
I still however can't figure how the front and rear clutch packs split apart.
heres a pic from that link showing the packs separated,...Do I just press the shaft out from the other assembly?
heres an edited pic.
Thanks again.

Okay, so drum A should slide right off. Drum B (if I recall correctly) has a snap ring the size of the drum at the bottom that holds the gear/shaft with the splines to each other. The input shaft and the gear with the splines are one peice so don't worry about that.

OK, I reached in and took loose the top snap ring that is the inside diameter of the drum, I got the pack apart and the clutches are so shot they were binding against the drive teeth preventing me from sliding the drum off.
Anyone in the Omaha, NE area with a good used 46RE?
