trailer light hook up

Default trailer light hook up

i have a 97 dodge 1500 i backed in to a tree and smashed my 7 pole plug for my trailor lights and i bought a new one and for some reason i plug it in all the lights on the trailor come on with out my lights on so i took it all apart again i don't think that i'm wireing it up right does anyone have an idea and whe woudl the tail light wire have power all the time

um, tail light should not be hot all the time -
something's wired wrong, either trailer or truck.

it has the factory plug cause the hitch and old 7 pole plug were factory so i didn't have to splice any wires

Did you look to see if you shorted any of the wires together either in a different part of the truck (for example, above the harness), or in the harness region?

I hate to actually ask it... but are you sure it worked right before hand?

If you have to manually reroute one or two wires its no big deal- get a circuit tester and test each of the outputs with their respective function. If one or two is bad, just cut and splice those wires separately into the taillight for example. If all of them are off, you must have managed to do something funky and more investigation may be necessary!
