gas guage just stopped working
I have researched everyone elses gas guage problems but nobody did like mine. i Have another car i drive for milage so i dont drive the dodge all the time. The last time i took it out the guage worked fine never moved, never had any problems with it. I go to start it and the guage doesnt even register. I only sat for two days and i was wondering what could have happened becuase it was just sitting and now it doesnt work.Maybe heat? becuase its been hot around here.
Yep, or the resistor it rides on failed, or there is a wiring problem between the PCM (which I think drives the gauge?) and the sending unit.
Check the various wires at the fuel pump module (fuel sending unit is part of it) and make sure you have what you are supposed to. There is a service manual available for download in the FAQ section that will have wiring diagrams for ya.

mine stopped working before as well....it was stuck on full...took out cluster, and moved needle by hand to E, started it and it shot back to full,(i had pretty much an empty tank) and i have found that the sending unit failed...come to find out its a very common problem...could be the same problem in your case

The gauge is fairly easy to replace - have to pull the cluster to do so.
Pull the dash bezel - remove two screws from the ash tray and cup holder. Lower the steering wheel, put it in first, and pull the bezel. Remove the lower dash cover (5 screws I think) and remove the auto tranny selection indicator from the column. Remove the 6 or so screws that hold the cluster in place and pull forward enough to remove the connectors behind it.
Remove the 5 or so screws that hold the plastic cover in place, remove the black gauge cover then remove the gauge in question.
Reverse to reinstall.
With that said, the individual gauges can be pretty pricy - seen them as cheap as $20 each and as high as $50 each. Check you local junk yard for a complete cluster as they are typically cheaper. I don't know what year yours is, but 98 and up (i think) have digital dashes that make clusterr swaps more involved.
I've got a problem with my '96 cluster - volt, gas and oil gauge are shot. I'm looking for a replacement cluster rather than individual gauges.
