I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 95,000 miles it has a 9 1/4 rear end with a Trak Loc LSD. Not sure if this has anything to do with my problem but last year had a trans lock up at 70 mph (rumble, rumble, POW). Now when I go from fwd to rev I get a clunk, dont like it. My U joints are good and my backlash is .011 ,set up calls for (.005 to .008). The only play I see is between the Pinion mate shaft and the Pinion mate gears (Spider gears). The dealer says the gears and shaft are only available with the carrier (almost $1,000.00 ouch). I was looking at a Detroit or an Auburn both around $500.00, any know if this will work?

Every Dodge product I've ever owned has done a "clunk" noise when shifting into reverse. Never caused any problems for me.

Let me move this to the 2nd gen (1994-2001) Dodge Ram section, get you some more opinions/answers.

 

Yep mine has done it since 38k when I got the truck. It is annoying but I'm not to worry about it.

As far as carriers its a 50/50 split between Detroit an Auburn. The Detroit is more agressive than the Auburn.

 

i have the same clunk...204k and still goes strong....i off-road, and beat teh hell out of my truck sometimes, but she still continues to go without a problem

 

When I was cleaning the old gasket off wipped the inside of the diff out found a piece of the clutch pack on the magnet. This may be why Im getting noise? Not sure how this would effect my side gear clearance but would think it might change a bit. I think ill try to replace the clutch pack and bearings but use the same carrier.

 

When u purchase a clutch pack it should
Come with new shims for your side gears and
Spiders, if not pick up a set. shim them tight and your clunk prob
Will be gone. I did the same thing and worked perfict.
